Discover
Wairarapa’s Natural Escape

Join us for an exciting day out in the beautiful and scenic Wairarapa.

This tour is available seven days a week, departing from Wellington Railway Station on Tranz Metro’s Wairarapa Service at 8.25am weekdays and 9.55am on weekends and public holidays. Skirting the shores of Wellington Harbour you travel through the Hutt Valley to emerge into the picturesque Wairarapa countryside. Passing through the gateway town of Featherston you will leave the train at Carterton (9.39am weekdays: 11.09am weekends etc) where you will be met by your tour coach and driver.

For those of you staying in the Wairarapa, you can also join this tour from any of the local towns. (Departure from Masterton would be 9.15am weekdays and 10.45am weekends and public holidays. Check with us for the departure times from other Wairarapa towns)

Our drivers will provide you with an interesting and informative commentary on your journey around some of the regions highlights.

First stop is Wairarapa’s unique attraction, the Paua Shell Factory and Shop. Here you will discover the world of Paua, from the tiniest shell through to beautiful jewellery and carved art forms. During working hours you have the chance to view the various process this unique shell undergoes on it’s journey to becoming beautiful finished souvenirs, gifts and jewellery..

The highlight of our tour is New Zealands National Wildlife Centre for breeding threatened species, Pukaha Mount Bruce. Here you will experience close encounters with threatened wildlife as you take tranquil bush walks through ancient forest of rimu, rata and kamahi trees. The centre has pioneered New Zealands first release of captive kaka, into the wild in 1996. These joyful native parrots will delight you with their aerial antics in the forest and at the daily feed stations. As part of your tour you will be able to view both the kaka and the native eel feedings. A nocturnal kiwi house, “nest cam” that provides viewing from inside the nests of selected birds, hands on exhibits and the fascinating Islands Alive audio visual section complete the visit to the complex. A lunch voucher, including a complimentary tea or coffee, enables you to choose your own food from the menu at Café Takahe where you can sit and hopefully watch the takahe potter about on their daily wanders. These amazing birds were thought to be extinct until their re-discovery by Dr Orbell in Fiordland in 1948.

Completing this tour is a pass to visit the Shear Discovery New Zealand centre and Aratoi, the Wairarapa Museum of Art and History. The Shear Discovery New Zealand centre has been developed to preserve the unique rural social culture and heritage of the shearing and wool industry in New Zealand The museum is located in two re-located pioneer wool (sheep shearing) sheds where a tribute is brought to life, tracing the efforts of the men and women that developed an industry that has become the back-bone of New Zealands farming economy. This is a first for New Zealand and the world! Next door is Aratoi where local and national art and historic exhibitions are on display, telling the stories of the Wairarapa, who we are, where we came from and where we might go.

The returning train service departs Masterton at 3.45pm weekdays and 5.00pm at weekends, arriving back in Wellington at 5.20pm and 6.30pm respectively.
