"Tired
after our journey we slept soundly in our tents, being awakened
to a gloriously fine morning by a chorus of tuis and bellbirds.
Undisturbed by human interference the stately forest giants
majestically dominated the scene while beautiful mamaku ferns
stood in groups overhanging the river and reflected in the
water.
The whispering of the breeze in the tree tops, the flutter
of innumerable birds in the branches above all presented to
us a picture of natural beauty never to be forgotten by those
privileged to see it."
L.O. Falkner, describing his first morning at Mount Bruce,
November 1888. |
