Sustainability

Pukaha Mount Bruce is all about conservation.

We practice this through our forest restoration and predator control programmes.  Success with these two programmes has enabled us to bring our forest alive with birdsong after a long silence.

The way we operate as an organisation, as a team and visitor experience is founded on the principles of minimising our impact on our precious environment.

Waste not, want not
We have extensive waste management and recycling programmes and very little of the waste we generate goes to landfill.

For example:

  • in Cafe Takahē, we only sell drinks in containers that can be recycled
  • our takeaway coffee containers are biodegradable
  • suppliers to our gift shop are required to minimise packaging (anything considered unnecessary is returned to the supplier for re-use)
  • we measure the amount of waste we send to the landfill
  • we continually seek improvement to waste systems and processes

We ask visitors to the centre to assist by using the special bins located near the front entrance for recycling and waste.  These are clearly marked and we are delighted to see our visitors are happy to take part.

Water, water everywhere
We are located in an area that has no town water supply so we carefully harvest our water from the roof of the visitor centre. We also take a small amount of non potable water from the stream. The more we can harvest the less we will take from the stream.

Energy efficient
We are very careful about the amount of electricity we use and exercise efficiency wherever we can.

Among the many energy minimisation actions in place, we have

  • installed energy efficient light bulbs throughout our buildings
  • a heat exchange system for our hot water for the café.
  • where possible we buy products and services from local suppliers

Re-cycled and biodegradable
Other important measure include

  • the re-cycled and reused materials in our kiwi house
  • cleaning materials are non-toxic and biodegradable

Continuous improvement
In the spirit of continuous improvement, we have a green team who meet regularly assess our progress and seek feedback from all those working at Pukaha Mount Bruce.

When you visit us you can help us by supporting the initiatives we are undertaking.
