Kiwi chicks this weekend

Our kiwi chicks are just over two months old and continue to progress  well.  Most have moved out of the nursery and are in outdoor enclosures.  Here they learn to forage, feed and fend for themselves.

This weekend - on both Saturday and Sunday at 2pm - you will be able to see one or two of the chicks as they are taken for weighing and checking.  We not only have our chicks from our forest, but also some chicks from Rimutaka Forest.  The opportunity to see chicks is so limited, we really hope you can make it.

Wild kaka chicks too
We are delighted to report we have had some outstanding mating, nesting and hatching results in our wild kaka nest boxes.  We have counted six nests so far, each with between 2 - 5 chicks in them.  This is the most prolific yet of our wild breeding pairs.  We are delighted.  It was not that long ago there were NO kaka in the wild.  As with all our wild birds, we have to help nature along a little with our consistent forest restoration and pest eradication programmes.  We always need your support in this.  Should you wish to help us continue with this successful rate of birdsong returning to forest, please click here to donate to the forest restoration programme by sponsoring a hectare.

Kiwi house closed
The kiwi house is still closed with renovations continuing at a good pace.   However, the eel feed and talk is on at 1.30, kiwi chicks viewing at 2pm and the kaka feed at 3pm.  All this, plus the yummy home made food in the cafe and the wonderful loop walk - what a fabulous day out!

Weather is great and the coffee is hot.  See you this weekend!
