Kokako
kokako feeding her chicks
Kokako were once common in forested areas throughout the North Island. Since human arrival their range has been contracting and their numbers dropping. This has been especially evident during the last part of the 20th century. The last reported sighting of kokako at Mount Bruce was a note from Elwyn Welch that birds were seen in "an area of scrub adjoining Mount Bruce" in 1949. This was one of the last sightings in the region.
