The Community Challenge
Local news media and the region’s service groups combined forces to back a district-wide project to set up a $100,000 endowment fund to aid the future restoration of the nationally-important Pukaha Mount Bruce. Pukaha Mount Bruce needs to raise $100,000 a year to fund pest eradication to keep predators away from the reserve which is surrounded by a 4km-wide buffer zone created by landowners in co-operation with the Greater Wellington and Horizons MW regional councils. The programme has been so successful that Pukaha Mount Bruce has been able to reintroduce kaka, kokako and kiwi into the wild.
