The National Wildlife Centre at Pukaha Mount Bruce is a nationally and internationally recognized captive breeding facility for a number of threatened bird species. It has worked successfully to save some of the rarest bird species in the world.

Captive breeding at the National Wildlife Centre has an important historical past. It is the first place where captive breeding techniques were pioneered as a method of conservation.
